Greater Randolph Area Partners in Education Foundation (PIE Foundation)
"Providing Children with the Essentials to Learn and Succeed."
Several years ago, a group of Rotarians came together with a goal of raising funds to provide help and financial assistance to families and children living in the Greater Randolph area of northeast San Antonio. It was felt that students would perform better in school if they had basic needs met.
The foundation was formed under the leadership of Rotarian, Mel Hillert who had the vision of developing the project to form the foundation and reach thousands of children living in Judson Indepedent School District and the Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City Independent School District in the heart of the area served by the Randolph Metrocom Rotary Club.
The Purpose of the foundation is to provide students with essentials such as school clothing or school supplies that they are unable to obtain from other local sources. This may include help with such items as eyeglasses, hearing aids, medicine, shoes, clothing, and more as determined by the distribution committee.
It is felt that many children may seem to "fall through the crack" because their families have not accessed other aid or federal resources. Sometimes delays in processing imposed a hardship on the child when their need is not fulfilled timely.
The PIE FOUNDATION does not replace existing programs or provide services that overlap other programs. A determination will be made to see of alternative assistance is available for each student. A representative from each school reviews the sitution with the parents or guardians of the child, completes an application and forwards the application to the Foundation committee.
Upon review by the committee and approval, a voucher is issued to the student to present to a merchant or healthcare professional for the service needed
The founding contributers of the foundation were Northeast Methodist Hospital in Live Oak, Texas and the Randolph Metrocom Rotary Club. Each year, a golf tournament is held to raise funds to meet the annual needs of the program. All funds raised during the charitable fund directly benefits the area children.
Last year over $25,000 was awarded to families. Since 1998, nearly $220,000 has been distributed for School supplies, prescriptions, clothing and other needs.
This year the Fairway for Kids Golf Tournament will be held September 20, 2010 at the Olympia Hills Golf Course and Conference Center, 12900 Mount Olympus, Universal City, TX 78148. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. Lunch and dinner will be provided sponsors of the event.
